The main reason that I signed up for Vivint was the doorbell camera. It's small, looks nice and worked really well with the iOS app when the salesman demonstrated it to us. Unfortunately our Vivint doorbell camera has been nothing but problems.

Keeping the Vivint doorbell camera connected and working has been a major problem. At least a couple times a month (that we notice) the camera disconnects from the Sky panel and needs to be reset. The only way the camera can be reset is by holding down the doorbell button for 10 seconds. I check the camera when I am out of town or away from the house, so pressing the 'reset' button is not an option. Note: The camera can also be reset on the Vivint Sky panel but this will not work if your camera is not talking to the panel. It cannot be reset from the iOS app.

Not only does the doorbell camera disconnect, but you lose all doorbell function! The doorbell button continues to light up and changes color when pressed, so whoever presses it assumes it is working. Obviously the iOS app doesn't alert you when the camera is disconnected.

When we signed the Vivint agreement we didn't select the premium service. That service costs an extra $10 per month and covers all of your equipment and the cost of the service calls. Our Vivint salesman told us all of our equipment was covered by warranty for the entire length of the contract (60 months). What he didn't tell us was that it would cost $49 to have a technician come to our house to replace the broken equipment. I will admit that it is my fault for skimming the the fine print, and I mean almost unreadable fine print, on the back of the Vivint contract. It does say there that you must have the Vivint premium service package to waive the service fee.

I would call Vivint technical support and they would have me reset the doorbell camera. That would usually get the panel and doorbell to talk to each other again. If that didn't work they would talk me through deleting the doorbell camera from the Sky panel and installing it again. This would always get the camera to reconnect, but it would need to be reset again within a couple of weeks. So we bit the bullet and had a Vivint technician come to our house and replace the doorbell camera.

Our new Vivint doorbell camera has the same connection issues. I once again called Vivint and was told that we would need to have a repeater installed between the camera and the panel. The panel shows that the signal strength on the camera is above 90%. Vivint said that they will charge another $49 service call fee to have a repeater installed. I argued that the system was not installed properly if we needed a repeater, but they will not waive the fee. Vivint said if we would have needed the repeater within 120 days they would have replaced it for free, but we are outside of that timeframe. During that 120 day timeframe Vivint customer service was having us reset the camera.

I am frustrated enough with the Vivint doorbell camera and their customer service that I am now fighting to have our contract terminated. Unfortunately it is going to cost us some lawyer fees. Our lawyer is confident that we will get this resolved quickly.

After researching Vivint doorbell camera problems it seems that the camera itself is the issue. I wish I would have researched Vivint as a company and their doorbell camera before signing the contract. I guess this is why they have pushy door to door salesmen.
