However, all this information is subject to change once the project is underway. The schedule is typically created during a project's early stages, but is referred to. 'Level 3' schedules are the output of the Planning stage, reflecting thorough decomposition and detailed tasks and estimates, reflecting a 'bottom up' estimating methodology. This is often the level of schedule that is submitted at the end of the project planning stage.

'Scheduling' is a computer term that determines how computer systems handle requests or communications. All requests or communications with a computer system require some amount of CPU, which is essentially like brain power for a computer. Scheduling determines the priority level for various requests for a computer system, including the order in which requests are addressed and which types of requests and communications take priority in terms of computer CPU and bandwidth.

High Level Scheduling

Plan Structure. Build a high-level plan using post-it notes with team members, then translate this into a Microsoft Project schedule. Use a hierarchical structure with phases and stages broken down into tasks. Add milestones for the start and end of each phase or stage.

High level scheduling is when a computer system chooses which jobs, tasks or requests to process. In this model, tasks or requests are prioritized and scheduled to complete based on the maximum amount of work or tasks the system can handle at once. Tasks for which the system does not have enough bandwidth to address are scheduled for later when other tasks are completed and free up the required bandwidth for the specific tasks. High level scheduling is also sometimes called 'long-term scheduling.'

Low Level Scheduling

Low level scheduling is when a system actually assigns a processor to a task that is ready to be worked on. In other words, in low level scheduling, a system assigns a specific component or internal processor to a specific task based on priority level, required bandwidth and available bandwidth. Low level scheduling determines which tasks will be addressed and in what order. These tasks have already been approved to be worked on, so low level scheduling is more detail oriented than other levels.

Medium Level Scheduling

Medium level scheduling does not apply to all operating systems. It determines whether some tasks or requests should be temporarily placed in a system's secondary memory and removed from the main memory until the main memory has sufficient bandwidth to address the task or request. Medium level scheduling will then place the task or item back into the system's main memory to address at the appropriate time.

Differences

Think of the differences of high, low and medium level scheduling in computing using an analogy of a night club. For example, using this analogy, the bouncer is high level scheduling. He determines who gets into the club, i.e., which tasks or requests are accepted by the system. The hostess is low level scheduling. She seats each person based on priority and space, i.e., determines the order and processors that will work on each accepted task. If someone gets into the club, but it is full, they may be asked to wait in another room until a table opens up. Medium level scheduling has a similar role in computing: tasks are temporarily placed in a waiting area until the system has bandwidth to address them. If a VIP (i.e., high priority task) enters the club (i.e., computer system), scheduling places that VIP to the front of the line, and everyone that is deemed a lower priority must wait until the VIP is seated and served.
